Tours and Safaris

One of the most common questions travelers ask is: “When is the best time to go on safari in Tanzania?”

The truth is, there isn’t just one perfect season. The ideal time depends on your personal preferences—whether you prefer sunny skies, dramatic green landscapes, fewer crowds, or peak wildlife viewing.

Let’s explore Tanzania’s seasons so you can decide which one suits your travel style best.

Understanding Tanzania’s Climate

Unlike destinations with four distinct seasons (spring, summer, autumn, winter), Tanzania’s location near the equator and the Indian Ocean gives it a tropical, equatorial climate.

There are two main seasons:

  • Dry Season – Mostly sunny, warm, and ideal for wildlife viewing
  • Wet Season – Marked by rainfall, lush landscapes, and fewer tourists

Even so, weather patterns can be unpredictable. During the rainy season, mornings may be wet but afternoons often turn bright and sunny. Likewise, occasional rain showers can appear during the dry months.January – March

(Hot and Mostly Dry Season)

January – March

(Hot and Mostly Dry Season)

The beginning of the year is typically the hottest period, with temperatures peaking in February. These months are generally dry and very popular for safaris, especially around New Year.

As water sources shrink, wildlife gathers around rivers and lakes, creating excellent viewing opportunities.

Tarangire National Park is particularly impressive during this time. Herds of zebras and gazelles congregate near the Tarangire River, attracting predators like lions and leopards. It’s a fantastic season for classic safari encounters.

Keep in mind that parks can feel busier during this peak travel window.

March – May

(Long Rainy Season)

From mid-March through May, Tanzania experiences its “long rains.” Showers often fall during the night or early morning, with sunshine returning in the afternoon.

The landscape transforms into a lush, vibrant green paradise. Wildlife remains active, and water is plentiful across the parks.

Some secondary roads may become muddy or temporarily inaccessible, but main routes remain usable in most areas, including the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

This is considered the low season, meaning:

  • Fewer tourists
  • More privacy in the parks
  • Discounted rates at many lodges

For travelers who don’t mind occasional rain, this period offers a peaceful and intimate safari experience.

June – September

(Cool and Dry Season)

These months are known locally as the “cool season.” While residents may consider it cold, most international visitors find the temperatures refreshing and comfortable.

Mornings can be chilly—so a light jacket is recommended—but afternoons are generally sunny and dry.

This is another high season for tourism, especially in Serengeti National Park, where travelers often come to witness the famous Great Migration.

If you prefer:

  • Mild temperatures
  • Minimal rainfall
  • Excellent wildlife visibility

This is an ideal time to visit.

October – December

(Short Rains & Festive Season)

The “short rains” typically occur between October and December, with temperatures gradually rising toward the end of the year.

October is known for blooming jacaranda trees, painting parts of East Africa in purple hues. In December, vibrant Flame Trees blossom just before the holiday season.

Christmas is a popular time for travel, and by mid-December, rainfall often decreases. Many visitors celebrate the festive season in a unique way—some even climb Mount Kilimanjaro to mark the occasion.

December weather is often considered excellent, though national parks and lodges may feel busier during the holidays.

So, When Is the Best Time?

The best time for a Tanzanian safari depends on what you value most:

  • Fewer crowds & lower prices? → March to May
  • Peak wildlife viewing & dry weather? → June to September
  • Hot weather & dramatic predator action? → January to March
  • Festive atmosphere & blooming scenery? → October to December

No matter the season, Tanzania offers unforgettable wildlife encounters and breathtaking landscapes year-round.
